"I am struck by the beauty and the monumental, sometimes cacophonous, sometimes muted colours of the North. Visits to the Northwest Territories in summer as well as winter inspired me to paint the bright, highly contrasting colours of rooflines, trucks, ice and the northern sky - including the spectacular northern lights. I tried to recreate the wonder of the North in paintings such as 'Aurora Borealis' and 'Arctic' and, in stoneware, in the sculpture 'Inukshuk'" -- Geert Maas
